What is a Ghost?
Happy Fall everyone. And apologies. It would seem that I not only lost that extra hour of daylight at the end of the day but months’ worth of newsletters! Holy moly! (What is a moly, anyway?)
To the new subscribers I met at a book fair, welcome! And don’t be afraid. Not of the ghosts you wrote about so eloquently nor the nuisance of a newsletter. This one is free and more infrequent than I’d like.
Speaking of ghosts: we did a fun thing at these book fairs: Spooktastic Book Fair in Framingham, MA (thank you Alyssa Alessi and Framingham Public Library); Nyack Public Library’s Local Authors event (thank you, Nanor Pogosian); and Merrimack Valley Halloween Book Festival (thanks to Mellisa Sherlin). We offered passersby the option to answer the question “What is a ghost?” and sign up for this newsletter. The results are published below.
For those of you who missed it, feel free to answer the prompt yourselves in the comments.
Enjoy!
What is a Ghost?
A memory that won’t stay dead.
A person that is dead and in this world for a certain reason.
A haunted being that can chase after you.
Someone who hasn’t crossed over.
A white sheet with holes cut out for eyes…but when you pull off the sheet, there’s nothing there.
A spirit that is holy or evil.
The imprint of intense emotion on time itself.
An echo.
I like them.
A glimpse through a worn spot to somewhere/when else.
A glitch in time.
A lingering, a memory, a blip of what was.
The energy that once was the heartbeat.
A reminder of the past, be it good or bad.
A spirit sent to convey a message.
A figment of my imagination.
A soul of someone who has passed away.
Dead but not gone.
A fingernail in an empty room, a hair on the shoulder. Footprints left behind on the beach, only to be wiped clean again.
An energy who has unfinished business, echoes of energy.
A transparent dead person.
Continued consciousness without a material body.
A floating soul!!
The memory of a person who changed your DNA.
A failed zombie.
A soul without a body.
A supernatural being that usually haunts for reasons like a loved relative, or someone previously murdered.
Invisible monster.
A ghost story: her mom passed 5 years ago and she sees bright flickering lights on and off everywhere she goes.
The commemoration of a crime never solved to the public’s satisfaction.
The soul of someone who died, living in a body that is between the living and the dead.
A ghost is not a ghost. They are good and bad spirits.
Energy left behind after trauma. Almost like a footprint.
The energy of some once-living entity that is reliving a loop of what they once experienced.
A ghost is always lurking…

Thanks, James. What is a ghost to you?
What a clever idea to poll people on this question! I enjoyed the poetry they evinced :)
